On February 21st, we are delighted to host Sophie Pinkham. A writer specializing in Soviet and post-Soviet, socialist and post-socialist culture, history, and politics, she is also a Professor of Practice in the Comparative Literature Department at Cornell University. Her writing has appeared in the New Yorker, the New York Times, n+1, the London Review of Books and Foreign Affairs, among other publications.

This workshop will provide a practical discussion of “public-facing” writing, i.e. writing in publications intended for an audience not composed of specialists in your field. How do you adapt your academic interests to be legible and appealing to a wider audience? We will talk about how to select outlets, pitch stories, and adjust your writing style. We’ll also consider the pros and cons of this type of writing. Participants should come with at least one idea for an actual article they might pitch.

This programming is possible thanks to the generous support of the Yale Poynter Fellowship in Journalism; Yale Public Humanities; Yale Russian, East European, and Eurasian Studies; and the New Haven Free Public Library.
