War, Strategy, and Resilience: A Conversation with Ukrainian and American Veterans

This event has passed.

At a moment when questions of strategy, resilience, and moral agency in war have returned to the global stage, this event brings together Ukrainian and American veterans whose insights come not from theory but from lived experience.

Senior Lieutenant Mykola Melnyk, commander in Ukraine’s 47th Mechanized Brigade and recipient of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky, will speak about leadership under fire, the psychological toll of modern warfare, and the process of rebuilding civic life after trauma. Wounded during Ukraine’s 2023 counteroffensive in Zaporizhzhia, Melnyk has become one of the most compelling Ukrainian voices linking battlefield realities with questions of strategy, democracy, and moral resilience. A lawyer by training and former adviser in Ukraine’s parliament, he now leads national programs supporting veterans’ reintegration and civic leadership. He will be joined by Oleh Bonchynskyy and Denys Hayda, whose stories of endurance and solidarity capture Ukraine’s collective struggle and strength.

The conversation will also feature Adrian Bonenberger, writer, journalist, and U.S. Army veteran whose work explores the human dimensions of war, and Mike York, a retired U.S. Army officer and current M.A. student in Yale’s European and Russian Studies program, who brings a strategic and humanitarian perspective from two decades of global service.

Moderated by Dr. Olena Lennon of the University of New Haven, a scholar of national security and transatlantic relations, the discussion invites Yale’s community of students, veterans, and faculty to reflect on shared professional ethics, evolving military strategy, and the meaning of civic duty in times of war.

This unique gathering offers a rare opportunity to engage directly with those shaping Ukraine’s defense and recovery—and to consider how experiences of war, resilience, and moral choice resonate across nations and generations.
