Congratulations to our Russian major Mary E. Orsak ’22, who was selected a Rhodes Scholar!

The Rhodes is one of the most prestigious scholarships, which allows select students from around the world to pursue all-expenses-paid graduate study at Oxford.  Mary plans to continue her work on Slavic cultures at Oxford by earning a Master of Philosophy degree in Russian and East European Studies.  At Yale, Mary completed her senior thesis on Czech and Soviet performance artists, titled “The Precarious Body: Second World Performance Art in the 1960s and 70s,” under the advisement of Prof. Marijeta Bozovic.  In addition to learning Russian and Czech at our department, Mary has also completed research on Soviet control of Orthodox icons, Russian hackers, and Václav Havel’s plays. This prestigious scholarship is a fitting recognition of Mary’s academic achievement and future promise. We are incredibly proud of her success and wish her all the best in her studies at Oxford!
